McClure, David, RSA

1926 – 1998

Initially read History and English at Glasgow University before studying on the first Fine Art degree course run jointly by Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University from 1947 until 1952. Spent postgraduate period studying in Spain and Italy. Taught painting at ECA under Gillies and became part of the Michie, Blackadder, Philipson circle that centred on the College and the older figure of Anne Redpath. McClure joined the painting staff at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee in 1957 alongside Morrocco. He became Head of Department in 1983. He became an Associate member of the RSA in 1963 and an Academician in 1971. He exhibited at the RSA from 1954 until 1997. McClure painted in oils and watercolours. His early work depicted memories of Sicily in sombre rich colours before his palette became lighter and more colourful. In addition to his painting achievements, he also wrote a monograph on his former teacher John Maxwell.
