Onwin, Glen, RSA

b. 1947

Glen Onwin studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1966 to 1970. He then completed his post-graduate year at Edinburgh College of Art, receiving his post-graduate scholarship in 1971. In 1972 he was awarded a Scottish Arts Council Award for travel in the USA. He graduated from Moray House College of Education in 1972 and went on to teach art in Edinburgh schools from 1972 to 1979. Board member of New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh, 1974 - 1984. 1979: part time lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art; visiting lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. 1980: visiting lecturer, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. 1983: visiting lecturer, Gray's School of Art. In 1987 he was appointed full time lecturer at the school of drawing and painting, Edinburgh College of Art and Director of Post-graduate study in 1992. Following this in 1992 he received the W & J Burness prize from the Royal Scottish Academy and in 1993 the William Gillies travel award, which he used to travel to the USA. In 1994 he was appointed as a senior lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art and in 2008 he was awarded a professorship. In 2003 he received the DCA Data Solutions Award at the RSA Annual Exhibition. Between 1999 and 2006 he held external and internal examiner positions at Newcastle and Edinburgh College of Art. Glen Onwin has exhibited at the RSA from 1984 and became an Associate Member in 1984 and a full Academician in 2010 upon his Diploma Work being accepted by the RSA Assembly of Academicians. Glen Onwin is married to Eileen Lawrence RSA.
