Syme, John, RSA

1795 – 1861

John Syme was the son of Alexander Syme, flower painter and his wife Catharine Johnstone or Syme, and was nephew of the artist Patrick Syme RSA. He trained at the Trustees Academy and with his uncle and was also a pupil of and assistant to Raeburn finishing his uncompleted works when Raeburn died in 1834. He was one of the founding members of the RSA in 1826. He specialised in portraiture and notable works include his 1827 portrait of John James Audubon which hangs in the Whitehouse.
